Jarocho Hopes for a New Home

Amidst this devastation, acts of resilience and hope shine through, exemplified by the remarkable rescue of a canine companion. This dog, found after days of being trapped in mud, starving, and disoriented, became a symbol of perseverance.
According to locals, who couldn’t identify the dog as belonging to their neighborhood, it was carried by the forceful currents to the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood, where it became mired in the pervasive mud.
“It seems it had been there for quite some time and was on the verge of drowning twice,” wrote photographer Daniel Ojeda on Facebook, detailing his involvement in the rescue.
The dog, whom he affectionately named Jarocho, narrowly escaped drowning on two separate occasions. Ojeda recounts that a soldier managed to pull him out the first time. On the second attempt, Ojeda and several neighbors worked together to free Jarocho and provided him with a makeshift leash while they sought further assistance.

No one in the vicinity recognized the dog; it was alone. Later, other neighbors, whom I thank profusely, Milena and her husband Álvaro, helped give him a much-needed bath, replaced the rough tether with one that wouldn’t cause further discomfort, and offered him some food. Afterward, we walked from that neighborhood all the way to downtown Poza Rica.

Jarocho Finds a New Family
Upon reaching downtown Poza Rica, Daniel and Jarocho found a veterinarian who provided the necessary medical attention. The dog was suffering from a fever, requiring medication, as well as deworming and another bath to thoroughly cleanse him of all contaminants he had been exposed to.
Given the challenging circumstances facing the residents of Poza Rica, Veracruz, Daniel made the decision to adopt the dog, naming him Jarocho. He is now seeking someone to help transport them both to Mexico City, where the Heraldo de México photographer resides.
Jarocho is currently in stable condition, having received his bath and medical treatments. He will spend the night under veterinary care, preparing for a new journey tomorrow towards Mexico City, where he will have the opportunity for a life filled with care and affection.
